Uganda Unveils East Africa’s First Collaborative “Internet-for-All” Network, Paving the Way for Universal Digital Access

Uganda has launched its first collaborative broadband network—a shared infrastructure model that enables every licensed telecom operator to deliver high-speed, secure internet to even the most remote communities. Powered by Veea’s cutting-edge edge computing technology and backed by Uganda’s telecom regulator (UCC), this initiative transforms competitive barriers into pathways of opportunity.

Imagine a world where no village is too remote, no community too isolated to access the transformative power of the internet—where education, healthcare, and economic opportunity flow seamlessly to every corner of a nation. This vision is now taking shape in Uganda, where a groundbreaking partnership between local telecom innovator Sombha Solutions Store, global technology leader Veea Inc., and infrastructure powerhouse BG Titan Group (BGT) has launched the country’s first shared-infrastructure “Internet-for-All” pilot network.

More than a technological breakthrough, this initiative marks a bold shift in how connectivity is delivered—answering the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC)’s call for industry leaders to move beyond competition and embrace collaboration as the new frontier of digital inclusion. By leveraging a shared infrastructure model, this network ensures that high-speed, cyber-secure broadband isn’t limited to a single provider but is accessible to every licensed telecom operator in Uganda, redefining what universal connectivity truly means.

A New Era of Collaboration

Haruna Nyanzi Lule, CEO of Sombha Solutions Store, captures the essence of this milestone:

“What we’re achieving today is exactly what UCC envisioned—transforming competitive barriers into pathways of collaboration. With this shared infrastructure, every provider can now offer world-class connectivity. Together, we are delivering the promise of the digital future to all Ugandans.”

The UCC has long championed consumer empowerment and digital equity, and this pilot aligns perfectly with its mission. Julianne R. Mweheire, Director – Economic Regulation, Content and Consumer Affairs at UCC, underscores the impact:

“Consumer empowerment and universal digital access are at the core of our regulatory vision. By championing transparent, affordable, and shared-infrastructure models like this, we’re fostering not only healthy competition but ensuring all Ugandans can actively participate in the digital economy.”

The Technology Powering the Revolution

At the heart of this initiative lies Veea’s Trusted Broadband Access (vTBA) platform, a next-generation connectivity solution that integrates Wi-Fi, multi-access backhaul, edge computing, and cybersecurity into compact, powerful VeeaHub® units. Designed for seamless collaboration, its key innovations include:

  • Unified Managed Wi-Fi Services – Enables multiple providers to share bandwidth efficiently through network slicing and advanced Quality-of-Service (QoS) management, ensuring optimal performance for all users.
  • Multi-Tenant Network Slicing – Allows operators to maintain independent, secure, high-speed connections for their customers while sharing the same physical infrastructure.
  • Open APIs & Edge Marketplaces – Empowers third-party developers to deploy telemedicine, e-learning, fintech, and agritech applications without additional infrastructure investments.
  • Edge AI & Intelligent Content Caching – Ensures uninterrupted access to educational materials, healthcare consultations, and financial services, even in low-connectivity areas.
  • Dynamic, Resilient Backhaul – Automatically switches between satellite, LTE/5G, microwave, and fiber to maintain seamless connectivity.
  • AI-Driven Cybersecurity – Provides real-time threat detection, encrypted communications, and localized security analytics to protect the shared network.

Remarkably, the pilot went from concept to reality in under 48 hours, delivering immediate multi-operator functionality and real-time network visibility.

Transforming Communities, One Connection at a Time

Beyond technology, this initiative is already reshaping lives across Uganda:

  • Tele-Maternal Clinics – Expectant mothers in remote villages now access real-time consultations with urban hospitals, reducing maternal mortality rates.
  • Smart Classrooms – Schools stream Ministry of Education-approved lessons or access cached content offline, ensuring no child is left behind.
  • Climate-Smart Farming – Smallholder farmers use IoT sensors and AI-driven analytics to optimize irrigation, predict weather patterns, and boost crop yields.
  • Community e-Centers – Serve as digital hubs, providing access to government services, microloans, and vocational training in local languages.

Allen Salmasi, Chairman & CEO of Veea Inc., highlights the long-term impact:

“Today’s shared network is tomorrow’s shared prosperity. By embedding cutting-edge computing and cybersecurity directly at the edge, we empower every operator to innovate faster, reduce costs dramatically, and deliver premium digital services. We’re proving collaboration is the smartest investment any community can make.”

Over the next six months, this pilot will serve as a scalable model for digital inclusion, with BG Titan Group leading the charge in financing, energy-efficient deployments, and infrastructure expansion.

Aymen Al Atat, Managing Partner at BG Titan Group, envisions a regional transformation:

“By merging innovative financing, robust infrastructure deployment, and revolutionary technology, we are redefining how quickly a nation can transform. This collaborative model isn’t just Uganda’s blueprint—it’s a powerful catalyst that will soon ignite similar transformations across East Africa.”

As Uganda pioneers this unprecedented shared-infrastructure approach, it sets a powerful precedent for bridging the digital divide—proving that when industry, government, and technology unite, universal connectivity is not just a dream, but an achievable reality.
