Seven Suspects Escape from Mayuge Court Cells

Police in eastern Uganda have launched an investigation after seven suspects escaped from court cells in Mayuge district.

The incident occurred on 29 August at the Mayuge Magisterial area in Katwe Zone. The fugitives include five men facing charges of housebreaking, malicious damage and aggravated robbery—identified as Juma Swamakomu, Jamali Elapasi, Ryan Tenywa, Hussein Isabirye, and Abdul Mukambwe.

Two others, Juma Mugoya and Fred Kaneene, were on trial for aggravated defilement.

Court supervisor Abdullah Igulwa said the escape happened while both the grade one and chief magistrates were away for public hearings on land cases. Security officers assigned to the court had also left with them, leaving the cells unguarded.

“The suspects took advantage of the lapse in security and slipped away unnoticed,” he explained.

Busoga East regional police spokesperson Michael Kafayo confirmed the escape, saying a joint security operation was underway to track down the men. Authorities believe the fugitives may be hiding on neighbouring islands including Jaguzi, Sigulu, and Dolwe.

Mr Kafayo warned that those re-arrested would face additional charges of escaping from lawful custody. He also appealed to the public to share information with security agencies.

“The continued stay of these suspects in the community poses a risk of mob action from their victims. We urge the public to cooperate with security forces,” he said.
