NUP coordinator in Teso detained for ‘photographing police’

A senior figure in Uganda’s opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has been detained in Katakwi district alongside three other party members.

Jonathan Okware, NUP’s coordinator for the Teso sub-region, was arrested on Friday in Toroma County together with local party chairperson David Livingston Lima, Stephas Aule, and another unidentified individual.

Party officials said the four were taken into custody after allegedly filming and photographing police officers without authorisation. The precise charges remain unclear, but NUP mobilizer George William Okoit told the BBC that Okware’s case was linked to “misuse of a computer” for using his phone to record the incident, despite not being accredited as a journalist.

Two of those detained have since been released on police bond, while Okware and Lima remain in custody.

Mr Okoit claimed the arrests were politically motivated, saying they were intended to intimidate NUP and undermine its growing support in Teso. He argued that the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) was unsettled by NUP’s ability to field more than seven candidates in Katakwi, a district long considered an NRM stronghold.

Police in the area did not respond to requests for comment, but sources confirmed the suspects are still being held as investigations continue.
