A fire that broke out early Sunday morning has destroyed part of a classroom block at Kakira High School in Jinja District, eastern Uganda.
According to police, the blaze started at approximately 6:10am on 27 July 2025 and quickly engulfed the second floor of the building. James Mubi, spokesperson for the Kiira Region Police, said the flames were already at an advanced stage by the time emergency crews arrived.

“By the time our team got there, the fire had reached full intensity and was rapidly consuming the upper floor,” Mr Mubi said.
Firefighters from the Uganda Police Fire and Rescue Services, with support from the Kakira Sugar firefighting unit, worked together to contain the blaze. Their swift intervention stopped the fire from spreading to lower floors and adjacent classrooms.
Although no injuries were reported, significant structural damage was sustained. The roof of the affected section collapsed, and classrooms used by Senior Two students were completely destroyed, including desks and other learning materials.
Preliminary findings suggest that an electrical fault may have triggered the fire, but police have launched a full investigation. The incident has been registered under case reference SD 02/27/07/2025 at Kakira Police Station.
Officials commended the collaborative response, which helped prevent further damage to the school. Further details are expected as investigations continue.
