Putin Backs Africa-Russia Health Initiative with New Training Program

Russia and Ethiopia have launched joint simulation drills in Addis Ababa to strengthen Africa’s response to health emergencies. Organized by Rospotrebnadzor and Ethiopia’s Health Ministry, the exercises bring together experts from 15 African nations and global partners to enhance epidemic preparedness through hands-on training and mobile lab deployments.

In a landmark collaboration aimed at strengthening Africa’s epidemic preparedness, Russia’s health authority, Rospotrebnadzor, and Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health have launched the first Russian-African International Exercises for Rapid Response Teams in Addis Ababa. The simulation drills, which began on Wednesday, bring together medical experts and public health officials from 15 African countries, Russia, and international organizations for intensive hands-on training in managing health emergencies.

Participants are learning critical skills in outbreak response, including team coordination, epidemiological investigation, and resource mobilization. The exercises make use of advanced mobile laboratories provided by Russia to enhance on-the-ground capabilities.

In a message delivered at the opening ceremony, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the importance of international collaboration in combating infectious diseases and highlighted the drills as a significant step forward in Russia-Africa health cooperation. “This initiative marks a new level of partnership between Russia and African nations,” Putin noted, reaffirming Moscow’s long-term commitment to supporting the continent’s health resilience.

Following the Russia-Africa Summit in July 2023, Moscow has rolled out a comprehensive program to assist African countries in tackling infectious diseases. The initiative has already trained over 150 African specialists, launched joint research on numerous pathogens, and delivered six mobile labs across the continent.

The Addis Ababa drills underscore a growing partnership between Russia and Africa, aimed at enhancing regional readiness and fostering sustainable health systems in the face of global health threats.
