The Kenya University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) has successfully conducted its first-ever kidney transplant surgeries, marking a historic milestone in the institution’s journey toward becoming a regional hub for advanced renal care. The groundbreaking procedures were carried out on May 7 and 8, 2025, with both donors and recipients reported to be in stable condition and recovering well.
The official unveiling of the kidney transplant program was celebrated in a high-level press briefing led by the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga. Applauding the KUTRRH team for their achievement, Dr. Oluga highlighted the importance of this step in expanding access to quality healthcare. He was accompanied by the hospital’s Acting CEO, Ms. Zeinab Gura, and the Chairperson of the Board of Directors, Senator Kembi Gitura.
The launch follows a three-year development phase, during which KUTRRH invested in capacity-building initiatives including the training of its medical personnel at India’s Apollo Hospital. The hospital also procured state-of-the-art equipment and forged vital partnerships to enable the establishment of a fully functional renal transplant unit.
The successful transplants were performed in collaboration with a team of specialists from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), who are providing ongoing mentorship to help KUTRRH develop its internal expertise in organ transplant care.
Looking ahead, the transplant clinic has already identified a third donor-recipient pair ready for surgery, with eight more pairs undergoing evaluation. The procedures are being supported by the Social Health Authority (SHA), which helps reduce the financial burden on patients—advancing the government’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.
This milestone not only represents a leap forward for KUTRRH but also signifies Kenya’s growing capability to provide specialized, life-saving healthcare services within its borders.
