Netflix Brings Blockbuster ‘Barbie’ to MENA Audiences, Marking Streaming Milestone

Greta Gerwig's groundbreaking fantasy comedy Barbie has officially premiered on Netflix MENA, introducing the billion-dollar blockbuster to homes across the region. Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the film redefines a cultural icon for a new generation.

Netflix MENA has officially added Barbie to its regional catalogue, bringing one of 2023’s most iconic and highest-grossing films to streaming audiences across the Middle East and North Africa. Directed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie became a global phenomenon not only for its striking visuals and vibrant storytelling, but also for its historic success at the box office. With this release, Netflix continues to expand its offering of high-profile Hollywood titles in the region.

The live-action film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, surrounded by a diverse and dynamic cast including America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman and Will Ferrell. At its core, the film explores identity, gender roles and existential discovery through a bright and often satirical lens. Barbie and Ken’s departure from the idyllic and pastel-hued Barbie Land into the unpredictable real world forms the emotional and comedic crux of the story.

Adapted from the legendary Mattel fashion doll line, this marks the first live-action film in the Barbie franchise. Previous iterations of the character were confined to computer-animated features and streaming series. This cinematic version—co-written by Gerwig and acclaimed screenwriter Noah Baumbach—infuses sharp wit and layered narrative depth into the globally recognised brand.

The journey of Barbie to the big screen was more than a decade in the making. Originally announced in 2009 under Universal Pictures with Laurence Mark attached to produce, the project eventually shifted to Sony Pictures in 2014, and ultimately came to life under Warner Bros.

Premiering in cinemas worldwide in July 2023, the film surpassed all expectations. It earned over $1.4 billion globally, becoming the highest-grossing release of the year and securing a place among the top 15 highest-grossing films in history. The film also made Greta Gerwig the first solo female director to cross the $1 billion box office mark.

The arrival of Barbie on Netflix MENA follows its earlier theatrical rollout in Egypt via Vox Cinemas. The streaming release is expected to attract new viewers and allow existing fans to revisit what has quickly become a modern classic.

As Netflix continues to invest in content for Arabic-speaking markets and expands its footprint in regional production and distribution, the inclusion of global sensations like Barbie signals a commitment to both quality and cultural impact. For millions of viewers across the MENA region, Barbie’s pink-hued revolution is just a click away
