The African Union (AU) has officially declared 2025 as the year for “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” reinforcing its commitment to addressing historical injustices. This decision aligns with ongoing global efforts to seek reparations for the lasting impacts of colonialism and slavery.

The AU’s commitment to reparations has been building over the years. In its 36th Summit held in February 2023, the Assembly of Heads of State and Government adopted Decision 847 (XXXVI) to support the Accra Reparations Conference, marking a significant step in advocating for justice. A year later, at the 37th Summit in February 2024, the AU further solidified its stance with Decision 884 (XXXVII) by endorsing the Accra Proclamation on Reparations and designating reparations as a flagship theme for 2025.

Between June and July 2024, the Executive Council of the AU refined the strategy by developing a comprehensive concept note on reparations. Finally, during the 38th Summit in February 2025, the AU officially proclaimed “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations” as the central theme of the year.

The AU’s announcement has gained widespread recognition, with notable discussions taking place at the United Nations and in various countries across Africa, Europe, the Americas, and beyond. Nations including Algeria, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and the United States have shown interest in the initiative.

Advocacy groups, such as Colonialism Reparation, have welcomed the AU’s bold stance, urging other international bodies to follow suit. The AU’s move echoes similar efforts by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which has long advocated for reparations from former colonial powers.

As the AU takes the lead in pushing for reparations, the focus will now shift to implementation strategies, international cooperation, and policy frameworks to ensure that justice is realized. With reparations now a central theme for 2025, African leaders and global stakeholders will be expected to take concrete steps toward redress for historical wrongs.
